Party Crash: GIRLS Photo Exhibit at Tattoo Culture 1/15/10

January 18th, 2010 § 0

Last Friday, the extraordinarily talented Maria Guido presented an exhibition of fine art photography entitled GIRLS. The exhibit, which took place at Tattoo Culture in the Billyburg section of Brooklyn and was sponsored by Needles & Sins, focused on the lovely ladies of the burgeoning burlesque scene, which has been seemingly gaining mainstream acceptance the past few years.

The place was packed with family, friends, burlesque enthusiasts, tattoo aficionados, and lovers of fine art. Of course, there was plenty of wine and beer to keep the crowd happy, and toward the end of the evening, burlesque performer Madame Leon wowed the crowd with a titillating feather fan dance.

Check out photos from the show after the jump.

GIRLS Photography by Maria Guido at Tattoo Culture

January 13th, 2010 § 1

This Friday, hit up ink-and-piercing emporium Tattoo Culture to catch the latest showcase from photographer extraordinaire Maria Guido.

Sponsored by Needles and Sins, the showcase, titled Girls, highlights a stunning selection of photographs spanning a decade and a half’s worth of shooting burlesque performers. Maria brings her feminine eye and “street” style to portraits that are often highly stylized—and traditionally shot from a male perspective. The result is an intimate look into the stage lives of the performers. Maria’s subjects are obviously very comfortable in front of her lens.

Fine & Raw Chocolate

January 4th, 2010 § 0

Fine and RawOver the weekend, I stopped into one of my favorite little spots, Choice Greene, and spied some uniquely packaged chocolate bars under the brand name of Fine & Raw. Being the impulsive shopper that I am, I snagged one and laid it on the counter with my other purchases. It turned out to be a $7.50 impulse purchase (*facepalm*) but I figured I only live once, so why not?

I’m so glad I made the purchase. As a budding gastrophile, I’m always looking to develop and refine my palate, and these exquisite bars will surely prove to be the gateway down the decadent path of artisanal confectionery. Because, brethren & sistren, these ain’t your regular bodega-level sweets. The Brooklyn-crafted candies from Fine & Raw are made with raw chocolate and sweetened with agave nectar instead of sugar. The use of innovative, low-heat techniques allows the chocolate to retain its raw vitality and flavor. And the ingredients’ organic origins ensure that what you’re putting into your mouth is both pure and healthy.

I’ve never been big on sweets. Nor would I have what you’d call an addictive personality. But after trying the rather divine goodness from Fine & Raw, well, I think I may have just become a raw chocolate junkie.

Come out tomorrow, Wednesday, December 30th, and have a drink (or two, or three) as DJ Les Boogie serves you a platter of funk, soul, hip-hop, pop & rock.

Sure, it may be a bit nippy. But no worries: Moe’s was voted one of TimeOut New York’s top bars near a subway. There’s no cover, so come for happy hour until 8pm, then stay and get your boogie on from 9pm-1am.
