GUESTLIST by Jay Fingers

As we countdown to the March 27th release of my debut novel GUESTLIST, I thought it would be kind of fun to introduce several of the story’s characters to you through interview sessions. That’s right, I’ve come up with a few questions that will be answered by the characters. Neat idea, right? Yes, I thought so, too.

Today, we’re interviewing Mr. Marcel Swann. Hello, Marcel. Thanks for joining us.

Actually, you can just call me Swann. Everyone does. I actually prefer it.

Okay, Swann, I apologize. Let’s begin, shall we?

Sure. Shoot.

Well, tell us about yourself. Are you originally from New York?

Nope, I’m from Detroit.

Really? Motown? That’s pretty cool.

Yep. Detroit is dope, don’t be fooled by what you might see on TV or whatever. Every city has its rough spots, every city goes through rough periods. But at the end of the day, my hometown is amazing. I’m glad I grew up there.

Where exactly did you grow up?

In Delray. I doubt you’ve even heard of it. Graduated from Southwestern. Jalen Rose went to my school.

Really? That’s interesting. Were you into sports when you were younger?

Man, what! I loved everything. I loved basketball, I loved football, hockey. I’m into sports, man. I’m a die-hard sports fan. I love all my teams through thick and thin—the Pistons, the Lions, the Red Wings, the Tigers. I love boxing, too. I always said that when I got older I would work out at [legendary boxing gym] The Kronk. But, you know, that didn’t happen. Ended up going to school, getting a job. That’s why I moved to New Yorkabout a few months ago. My job wanted some people to come out and start handling some accounts out here.

Who do you work for, if you don’t mind me asking?

Omni Consumer Products. I’m an account manager. You know I handle the accounts of different clients, make sure they’re happy with our products and try to strengthen the relationship between us and them.

How long have you worked for them?

Since I got out of school, so about three years. Rumor’s going around they’re making a big announcement at work next week. [rubs hands] I hope this means some of us are getting promoted.

Would a promotion mean staying in New York or going back to Detroit?

Probably staying. Which is cool. I like New York.  It’s different from my hometown but it’s cool.

What do you like most about New York?

Just the energy. The vibe. Everyone here hustles. The people I’ve met here, I don’t even think they have real jobs but they live way nicer than me. Nicer clothes, nice apartments. I’m just like, “Well, shit.” [pause] Oh, and the women. Oh my God. The women here are unbelievable.

I take it you’re still single. Still playing the field.

“Playing the field” … [laughs] I don’t know that I’d say that. I’ve gone out on a few dates, had some flings. I do my thing.

Ha! Understood, Swann, understood. Well, is there anything else you’d like to share with us before we wrap this up?

Just one thing. Look, I know I’m in New Yorknow and I’m supposed to root for the Knicks. And I can appreciate that, you know, Jeremy Lin and Byron Lord are kicking ass right now. But I’m telling you right now, Detroit is gonna get in that ass come the post season and we’ll see how your “superstars” handle themselves then.

Damn, son!

[Laughs] I’m just sayin’.

Ha! Well, thanks for your time, Swann. We’ll catch you on the flipside.

Did you like the interview? What are your thoughts on Swann so far? What questions would you like the next character to be asked? Leave all thoughts in the comments below. And find out what happens to Swann, and more, in GUESTLIST, available March 27th!
